We recently wrapped up two successful sessions of FlowCam University at our headquarters in Scarborough, Maine, where users from across industries gathered to sharpen their flow imaging microscopy skills, exchange ideas, and get hands-on experience with FlowCam instruments and software.
Building on the momentum from previous years, this year's biopharma and aquatics-focused sessions offered deeper dives into data workflows, instrument optimization, and collaborative problem-solving. Participants learned how FlowCam technology continues to evolve to support research in the life sciences, and left with practical insights they can apply right away.
Hands-On Training and Real-World Applications
Across two immersive days, attendees worked directly with FlowCam specialists on instrument setup, sample handling, and advanced data analysis. Software sessions focused on maximizing the capabilities of VisualSpreadsheet, including image filtering, classification, and data export.
Interactive lab modules gave users a chance to refine their technique and troubleshoot real-world challenges, whether quantifying aggregates in protein therapeutics or classifying plankton in environmental samples. Participants appreciated the opportunity to bring their own datasets and questions to our staff's "office hours", where our application scientists offered personalized guidance tailored to each user’s research goals.
This year we also introduced and demonstrated the new features in VisualSpreadsheet 6.1, including the ability to export FlowCam data directly in EcoTaxa-compatible formats and enhanced compliance tools for 21 CFR Part 11. Customers planning to upgrade were able to see these capabilities in action and learn best practices for incorporating the latest software improvements into their workflows.
A Collaborative Environment
As always, one of the highlights of FlowCam University is the opportunity to connect with other users. This year's events brought together a diverse mix of scientists and technicians from academia, industry, and government organizations—each bringing unique perspectives on how they use FlowCam in their work.
Between sessions, conversations ranged from sample prep techniques to data interpretation strategies, with plenty of networking and knowledge-sharing along the way.
Participant Feedback
Here’s what some attendees had to say about this year’s event:
“I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the FlowCam. Talking to other companies who use it was also very useful and helped bridge some gaps in my knowledge. During the training our questions were encouraged and sometimes led to discussions with our fellow classmates. Being able to build off each other's questions and knowledge was a valuable part of the training that i can't get from an online course."
“Thank you so much for inviting me to this training. It was very useful, and it was a pleasure to meet the company and other participants. FlowCam has extraordinarily knowledgeable employees with great customer service skills.”
Looking Ahead
FlowCam University continues to grow each year, shaped by the enthusiasm and input of our user community. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us this year for making it another memorable and productive event.
Planning for the next FlowCam University is already underway—stay tuned for details on dates and registration opportunities. We hope to make these hands-on learning opportunities available across more applications and to broaden the choice of dates.
In the meantime, you can explore FlowCam resources, application notes, and videos in our FlowCam Customer Support Center to keep building your expertise.
