Staff Engineer

About the Role:

Our engineering team is growing, and we are seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer to augment our product development program around our flow imaging microscopy platforms. The role will focus on building and supporting engineering operations to bring products from early-stage development to volume build-to-order manufacturing.

The Staff Engineer fulfills a critical role and is responsible for the product development and life cycle of the current and next-generation FlowCam instruments. The Staff Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and will have the support of our experienced and diverse engineering team.

The preferred candidate will be a skilled mechanical design engineer with 5+ years of experience and impeccable attention to detail with a focus on continuous improvement.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scope mechanical and systems design projects
  • Technical project leadership
  • CAD design
  • Maintain production bills of materials
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Draft mechanical drawings and production work instructions
  • Oversee change management processes within the production and engineering teams

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No direct reports
  • Technical project leadership roles will vary depending on company needs

Education Requirements:

  • Associates degree in a relevant engineering discipline with 10+ years of professional experience (or)
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in a relevant engineering discipline with 5+ years of professional experience
  • Project management and technical project leadership experience preferred

Experience and Technical Requirements:

  • Experience in designing capital laboratory instrumentation for research and process development applications desirable
  • Experience in optical, optomechanical, or other high-tolerance mechanical design applications (<0.001") is desirable
  • Product design and development experience
    • Develop prototype designs into volume commercial products
    • Build order of operations for work assembly and service and produce work instructions
    • Design of experiments, verification, and validation procedure drafting
    • Conduct and interpret tolerance analysis
    • CAD modeling: Solidworks preferred, Autodesk/PTC/Siemens acceptable
      • Parts and assemblies, draft mechanical drawings
      • Manage large assemblies, revision control
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) experience
    • Knowledge of change management within the production environment
      • Engineering change management processes
      • ISO9001 compliant processes - OFIs, CARs
    • Familiarity with at least 3 of the following manufacturing technologies:
      • Machining - mill, lathe
      • Sheet metal design
      • Low-volume plastic design and manufacturing
      • Injection molding
      • Rapid prototyping
    • Verification testing
      • Experimental design, test method design, data analysis, reporting
      • Failure/root cause analysis
    • Familiarity with scripting and programming
      • Python, Java, VBA, parsing API documentation
      • Source code documentation and revision control
      • Automating data processing and analysis

Physical Requirements:

This position involves working in and moving around an office, lab, and assembly/production environment. It involves extensive use of a computer. This role involves constant communication with employees, vendors, contractors, and business stakeholders. On occasion, work outside of regular business hours may be required.
