Field Applications Scientist
About the Role:
We are seeking a Field Service Engineer to join our Customer Service team. We are an innovation leader and manufacturer of analytical instruments and software used in the biopharmaceutical, aquatics, and materials industries. This role is ideal for someone with a background in chemical or biomedical engineering, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, aquatic sciences, or a related technical field who enjoys combining hands-on technical work with customer interaction.
As a Field Service Engineer, you will help provide world-class FlowCam support and service to a diverse global customer base. You will travel to customer sites for installations, training, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and service of FlowCam instruments. You will also work closely with Sales, Engineering, Software, Manufacturing, Marketing, Customer Service, and international partners to resolve customer needs and support product success.
This position is based at our headquarters in Scarborough, Maine, and requires approximately 50% travel, including domestically and internationally. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform installations, validation activities, preventative maintenance, and repair services at customer sites, both domestically and internationally.
- Train customers on the effective use of FlowCam instruments, software, and related workflows.
- Provide technical support and troubleshoot instrument or software issues by phone and email when not traveling.
- Share customer feedback and service observations to help identify opportunities for product and process improvements.
- Document service activity, customer issues, and follow-up needs to support accurate records, timely resolution, and continuous service improvement.
- Assist with testing new instruments, software updates, and service workflows to support product readiness and customer success.
Experience and Technical Requirements:
- Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Biology, Biotechnology, Marine Sciences, or another relevant discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience in a scientific, laboratory, technical, or instrumentation-related role.
- Prior experience in a customer support, field service, or product service role is a plus.
- Analytical thinking, strong problem-solving skills, and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing needs, and follow through on customer and internal commitments.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office; familiarity with CRM or customer support software is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites approximately 50% of the time, including domestic and international travel.
- Ability to work in laboratory and customer site environments and lift instruments of equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver's license and passport, or ability to obtain them after hire.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves working in an office environment, customer sites, and analytical laboratories. It involves substantial communication with employees, corporate partners, customers, distributors, visitors, vendors, contractors, and others.
