Characterizing Algae with Dynamic Fluid Imaging Analysis

With the FlowCAM you can identify algae with ease because of its VisualSpreadsheet® software. VisualSpreadsheet operates just as any other spreadsheet does – allowing you to sort and filter data. The difference is that rather than interacting with just numbers, you can query, sort, and filter the data via the images.

The results are displayed as images instead of thousands of rows of numbers. Although you can still see the numbers when you want to. Using the unique interactive scattergram feature, you can quickly select any particles of interest from any of the configurable graphs on the main window. You also have access to a summary of statistics (mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variability, etc.) for your filter set while also seeing all the images!

Automated Algae Analysis

When you save your user-built filter sets as libraries, you can take advantage of the FlowCAM’s classification feature which provides automated algae identification. Every time you run a new sample through the FlowCAM, each algal cell imaged is compared against these libraries. Statistical pattern recognition algorithms identify which library the algal cell most closely resembles, and assigns it to that classification.

Above shows results from a FlowCAM analysis where four algae species were automatically filtered into libraries and the concentration of each species was calculated. This type of algae characterization is only possible using an imaging particle analysis system due to various measurements you have access to. In this case, a combination of shape and gray-scale attributes were use to separate the algae species.
